Childcare - Apprenticeship

Content

The Childcare Apprenticeship is a training and education programme, combining the Level 2 Certificate in Children and Young People’s Workforce (CYPW) and Key Skills with real work experience leading to employment within childcare settings across Merseyside.

This qualification is aimed at nursery assistants, crèche workers, and special educational needs assistants working in a supporting role. This qualification has been especially designed for people who work with children and young people aged 0 to 19. It reflects the diverse group of people who do not work in a single age range, but move between settings catering for different needs.

Learners need to achieve 31 credits from the 13 mandatory units which are:

  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Child and young person development
  • Contribution to the support of child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Contribute to children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Paediatric Emergency First Aid
  • Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

Learners then need to achieve a minimum of 4 credits from a choice of 16 optional units that best match their usual work role. These units cover a wide range of subjects, including supporting the varying needs of children and young people and contributing to different areas of development.

This qualification is a work based award and learners' skills and knowledge are assessed in the workplace whilst they are working directly with children, young people, their families and colleagues. An assessor will help them plan and gather a portfolio of evidence of their daily routines. Learners must be working in a real childcare setting on a full or part time basis and in paid or voluntary work. If learners require any additional training prior to assessment this can be based in or out of the workplace or by distance learning.
