Childcare - Advanced Apprenticeship

The Childcare Advanced Apprenticeship is a training and education programme for employed staff which combines vocational experience with a Level 3 Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce and Key Skills, and is a recognised qualification within childcare settings.

This qualification is aimed at child minders, day-care supervisors, Sure Start workers and nursery nurses. Learners may have some supervisory responsibilities or they may be involved in specialist tasks with some degree of responsibility or independence.

Learners need to achieve 49 credits from the 16 mandatory units which are:

  • Promote communication in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Engage in personal development in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Promote equality and inclusion in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Principles for implementing duty of care in health, social care or children’s and young people’s settings
  • Understand child and young person development
  • Promote child and young person development
  • Understand how to safeguard the wellbeing of children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Develop positive relationships with children, young people and others involved in their care
  • Working together for the benefit of children and young people
  • Understand how to support positive outcomes for children and young people
  • Context and principles for early years provision
  • Promote learning and development in the early years
  • Promote children’s welfare and well-being in the early years
  • Professional practice in early years settings
  • Support children’s speech, language and communication

Learners then need to achieve a minimum of 16 credits from a choice of 41 optional units that best match their usual work role. These units cover a wide range of roles including working with babies and children to support their development and physical needs, setting up a home based childcare service and supporting disabled children and young people.

This qualification is a work based award and learners' skills and knowledge are assessed in the workplace whilst they are working directly with children, young people, their families and colleagues. An assessor will help learners plan and gather a portfolio of evidence of their daily routines. Learners must be working in a real health or social care setting on a full or part time basis and in paid or voluntary work.

Delivery

The programme will be delivered over 12-18 months and will be a mixture of teaching and training both in the work place and at training sessions at Alder Training (including night classes) delivered by Alder Training's experienced and professional training managers.

Achievement

Upon successful completion of this programme you will achieve an Advanced Apprenticeship in Children's Care, Learning and Development which will qualify you to Supervisory / Management status and assist you progress further with your career.
