A recent story this month reminds us that our training provides learners with sound underpinning knowledge to enable them to directly influence working practices within their employer.
As a direct result of the training we provided, Emma (Health NVQ 3) has changed the practice in one of the largest hospitals in the country. Following sessions with her Training Manager, Emma learned that clients who had indwelling urethral catheters needed something additional to prevent the tension of the catheter and tubing, to reduce the risk of trauma, discomfort and infection to both upper and lower urinary tract. Emma took her knowledge to her ward manager, the catheter specialist nurse and senior nursing personnel.
Following additional research undertaken by the clinical nurse specialist it was agreed that leg straps would be purchased and placed on the regular ordering sheet and that all clients throughout Aintree Hospital Foundation NHS Trust who had an indwelling urethral catheter must have a leg strap secured to their thigh and attached to the catheter tubing to reduce the risk of trauma and infection for the client as well as to promote client comfort.
