Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE)
Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) are a government initiative and a key element in the Learning + Skills Council’s strategy to improve the skills of adults in the workforce. The aims of the CoVE initiative are to:
Improve the skill levels of the current and future workforce
Improve the quality of training locally, regionally and nationally
Work with other providers to improve their provision
The Greater Merseyside Health & Social Care CoVE

In a unique partnership, Alder Training, Wirral Metropolitan College, Southport College and Knowsley Community College have been awarded Centre of Vocational Excellence in Health & Social Care. We are one of only four Health & Social Care CoVE’s in the North West of England.

This partnership works closely with the Sector Skills Councils, Learning + Skills Council, Regional Development Agency, Strategic Health Authority, Local Authority, employers, training providers and other key stakeholders to transform the Health & Social Care workforce to meet the changing needs of the sector.

Key Objectives for the CoVE include:
To increase the number of learners accessing level 3 qualifications
To develop clear progression pathways in training and employment
To create an employer network that actively influences the work of the CoVE
To share and disseminate good practice throughout the provider network
To establish firm partnerships with other providers and secure their involvement in future activities
To support the ‘skills for life’ needs of the sector
Key Achievements To Date
Significant increase in training provision that is available in Merseyside
Increased quality of training leading to increased success rates
Significant increase in the volume of employers using CoVE services
